Two attractions on today's menu: the
traditional family oriented Puntarenas and the cradle of
CR ecotourism: Monteverde.
Take first Inter-American Highway
passing near Alajuela, Palmares, San Ramón, Cambronero
and Esparza, where you take a rest as most drivers do.
There you really start to feel our tropical heat, our
calorcito. A few more turnings, a sandy long peninsula
and you arrive at Puntarenas, an active city and resort,
an eternal capital for Costa Ricans and foreigners to
enjoy sea, sand and fun. See the new sea aquarium.
Heading to the North via Sardinal and
Guacimal, you join Monteverde and Santa Elena Reserves
after 50 km of local roads in a poor repair. Monteverde
as a community was founded in 1951 by 12 Quaker families
from Alabama, who first established agricultural
productions and protect surrounding cloud forest. Cheese
turned out to be a successful activity. Their
descendants today elaborate 15 types of cheese, as well
as jam, coffee, etc. (Production plant open to
visitors). The stars of the ecological richness of the
whole area is centered on the shining quetzal and 400
other birds together with the golden toad, unique in the
world. Other spots to visit: Hummingbird Gallery,
Butterfly Garden, Craft Shop, Sugar Mill, etc.
