North of Alajuela City, you may easily notice that the scenery boasts every type of green plantations. Alajuela and Heredia Regions with their specific soil, altitude and climate have always been our Coffee Capital for more than one century, an important fact contributing to the formation of our present nationality, culture and economy. More to the North is San Pedro and its waterfall, then Fraijanes and Poasito, last town before Poás Volcano NP. With an altitude of 2,708 m,

 it is one of the most spectacular craters in the world, an enormous bowl 1 km large and 314 m deep.

Sulfuric fumaroles float around in this lunar atmosphere. As many as 79 birds species are found here.

After Varablanca, you arrive at La Paz Waterfall Gardens, an ecological attraction with 5 sumptuous waterfalls and a brand new lodge. Then San Miguel, La Virgen (where many believe The Virgin Lady makes appearances), Chilamate and you join Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, one of CR's ecotourism destinations. From the river harbor, you can ride a boat to the Caribbean coast
